Friends of the Playhouse

The Friends of The Playhouse was formed in 1991.  Its objectives are:

Since the 'Friends' started its membership has risen annually to current levels of around 750 members. There has been a steady growth in the number and range of their activities which now include the organisation of theatre tours, assisting with theatre mailings and the distribution of the Playhouse brochure via the 'Adopt a Shop' scheme.

Many visitors and artistes have expressed their thanks for the reception and refreshments they have received on arrival from 'Friends' carrying out various voluntary duties. This year the Playhouse was voted  'most hospitable theatre in the country' by the artistes and agents at the annual Encore Theatre Magazine Awards.

Up to December 2002 the Friends have spent £65,000 on various projects in the Theatre. Recent projects have included new sets of house curtains and 'silvers' costing £4,500, a new lighting desk costing £7,000 and the introduction of the Playhouse website. Our 10th anniversary in 2001 was celebrated with the purchase of a new grand piano which cost appropriately 'Ten Grand'. Since then we have purchased a set of dimmers for the lighting system for installation by the theatre staff, new 2-way radio sets for the duty staff and a new system to enable the hard of hearing to better enjoy the performances.
